Abstract: The paper presents the new meta-informative (pragmatic) theory on the basis of which the authors build models of how information is expressed and linearised in human languages. The consideration is taken on the examples of the ergative and accusative languages. Definitions of the subject only on the syntax level are not adequate for such languages as for example Japanese, where a subject is not obligatory. Moreover, defining the subject on the meta-information level as the global centre of attention of the utterance might lead to the universal definition of subject valid for all human languages. (PK)
